Leroy W. Thompson

Leroy W. Thompson, 77, of Williamsport, passed away Monday, July 7, 2014, at the Williamsport Regional Medical Center.

He was born May 8, 1937, in Williamsport, the son of Harry and Elizabeth (Melix) Thompson.

Leroy was married to the former Bertha A. Jenkins with whom he shared 50 years of marriage.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and served during Vietnam.

Leroy was a graduate from Williamsport Area High School and was very active in sports.

He was also a graduate from Lycoming College.

Leroy retired from the Williamsport School District for over 30 years as an elementary teacher and he thought education was very important.

He was community oriented and cared deeply for his family. Leroy was softhearted and very giving to his family and friends.

Leroy is survived by his loving wife, Bertha; a son, Leroy H. Thompson, of Williamsport; a daughter, Quinn M. Thompson, of Charlotte, N.C.; three stepdaughters, Roberta Green, of Elmira, N.Y., Gayle (John) Richardson, of Buffalo, N.Y. and Anita Quartman, of Elmira, N.Y.; and a host of grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Harry “Duke” Thompson.

Relatives and friends are invited to Leroy’s Life Celebration service 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2014, at the Shiloh Baptist Church, 433 Walnut St., Williamsport, with the Rev. Joseph Walker and Deacon John Grimes officiating. A visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the James C. Maneval Funeral Home, Ltd., “A Life Celebration Home,” 500 W. Fourth St., Williamsport, and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in the Green Lawn Memorial Park.
