Cada R. Grove

Cada R. Grove, for 49 years devoted husband of Susan Wynn Grove, of Onancock, passed away at the Sentara Norfolk General Heart Hospital on Monday, May 9, 2016. He was 73. Cada was born in Montgomery on May 5, 1943, the son of the late William R. and Mary Machamer Grove.

He was a 1962 graduate of Montgomery Area High School and received a B.S. in education from The Pennsylvania State University. He honorably served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam and had attained the rank of Captain before resigning from active duty. He worked for 28 years for AT&T, retiring as manager of the Consumer Customer Billing Center.

During his 18 years on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, Cada committed much of his time to public service. He was a former member of the boards of Eastern Shore Rural Health and of the Eastern Shore Coalition Against Domestic Violence. He also organized and operated a concession stand for several of the Shore’s Relay for Life events. For five years, he coached Odyssey of the Mind teams for Northampton County Public Schools. His teams invariably returned from competitions with trophies. He was a member of the Maritime Committee of the Eastern Shore of Virginia Historical Society with whom he worked on the restoration of the log canoe “Annie C.” He was one of the instructors for the Historical Society’s summer history camp.

Cada was an elder of the Naomi Makemie Presbyterian Church, Onancock, where he was active in missions and ministries including Eastern Shore Presbyterian Ministries, American Red Cross blood drives and G. F. Horne dinners. As a member of Joe’s Gang, he helped keep the church building in good shape. He also for many years taught children’s Sunday School and Bible School where he was revered by several generations.

Cada was unsurpassingly devoted to his alma mater, Penn State. He was instrumental in establishing a Center for Excellence in Science Education and co-chaired a donor recognition society in the Eberly College of Science. He maintained to the end of his days that the best ice cream he had ever tasted was made at the Penn State Creamery.

In his spare time, Cada was a craftsman woodworker and made Windsor chairs and other furniture. He especially enjoyed sailing. He was past Commodore of the Huguenot Yacht Club, New Rochelle, N.Y., and a member of the Onancock Sailing Squadron.

In addition to his wife, Cada is survived by brother Larry Grove and his wife Deborah of Montgomery, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, William Grove and John Grove and by sisters, Janet Grove Whitmire and Joan Grove Hans.
