Shirley Welker Brandau

Shirley Jean (Welker) Brandau, of Lewisburg, followed the light, Friday, Oct. 21, 2016, at Riverwoods Nursing Home, Lewisburg, at the age of 86. She was born Aug. 28, 1930, in Sunbury, the daughter of the late William Cares and Mary Mildred (Raker) Welker.

Shirley was a 1948 graduate of Sunbury High School. She first worked in the office at Brosius Lumber, Sunbury and was the church secretary at Zion Lutheran Church, Sunbury. On Palm Sunday, March 18 1951, she married Walter Lee Brandau of Sunbury/Selinsgrove, son of the late Martin Edward and Dorothy Alice (Seiwell/Richards) Brandau.

Along with her husband, Wally, they ministered at the parishes of Saint John’s Lutheran in Espy and joint parish of Hidlay Lutheran in Bloomsburg from 1955 to 1959; Holy Trinity Lutheran in Berlin from 1959 to 1967; Trinity Lutheran in Milton from 1967 to 1977; Mount Calvary in Johnstown from 1977 to 1985; and Saint Mark’s Lutheran in Williamsport from 1985 to 1995, Shirley was a member of the choirs, church councils and the women’s groups.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, camping, swimming, quilting, as well as being involved with Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts.

Shirley is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Rebekah and Robert K. Miller Jr., of Milton; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Lee and Barbara (Neitz) Brandau, of Milton, Mark and Patricia (Mauger) Brandau, of Mooresville, N.C., Timothy Brandau, of Paxinos and Edward and Amy (Kocis) Brandau, of Johnstown; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Shirley (Brandau) Tyler, of Saint Petersburg, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Eileen and a brother, Wm. Cares Welker Jr.

Celebration of life services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 10 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, Lewisburg.

Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

The family is being assisted by the Shaw Funeral Home, 400 N. Front St., Milton.
