Bessie Arlene Hurley

Bessie Arlene Hurley, 91, of Montoursville, passed away Thursday, February 16, 2017 at Valley View Rehab and Nursing Center where she received hospice care in conjunction with UPMC Susquehanna Health. She was born February 13, 1926 in Nordmont, PA, a daughter of Charles and Helen Edgar Peterman. She was predeceased by her two young sisters Kathleen (age 17) and Marjorie (age 16) Peterman, and was also preceded in death 23 years ago by her husband of almost 48 years Snavely H. Hurley whom she married February 22, 1947.

She was a graduate of Dushore High School in 1944. Mrs. Hurley worked as a telephone operator when in Dushore, and as her children grew up worked at Carey McFalls, Stroehmann Bread Co. and at Lysock View in the kitchen, as well as being a homemaker. She enjoyed helping at church dinners, mending, cooking, and volunteering at Rose View Manor Nursing and Rehab Center. She enjoyed watching Yankee baseball, and was a faithful fan of her grandchildren’s sporting events through many years.

She enjoyed caring for and visiting with her family, especially helping her grandchildren, and caring for her favorite dogs through the years. Above all she enjoyed attending her church services and raised her family in a Christian home. She was admired and loved by many young folks who called her “Grammy Hurley”.

She is survived by her son, Barry (Marilyn) Hurley of Eldred, PA and daughter Jeanne K. (Russell) Twigg of Trout Run, Cascade Township; six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

A viewing for family and friends will be held Monday morning from 10:30 – 11:30 at Faith Wesleyan Church, 1033 Tucker St. with the funeral service to follow at 11:30 a.m. with her Pastor Timothy K. Hartzell officiating. Interment will follow in the Montoursville Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions in Bessie’s name be made to the Compassion Fund at Faith Wesleyan Church. Arrangements are by Spitler Funeral Home Montoursville.
