Nancy J. Baker, 88, died at her home in Paoli, on Feb. 13 after a rapid decline in health following a stroke. She was under the care of Holisticare Hospice and her daughters, Leigh and Mindy, were at her bedside. Her passing was peaceful.

Nancy was born in Milton and lived in Saudi Arabia, Chicago, Ohio, and Newport News, Va., before moving to Williamsport with her husband, Eugene Baker, in 1967.

She graduated from Milton High School in 1946 and Harrisburg Hospital School of Nursing in 1949. She pursued her bachelor’s degree at Bucknell University and Stephens College. Nancy considered herself a lifelong learner.

Nursing was her career and passion. After graduating, she joined the education department at Harrisburg Hospital. Later, she accepted a position at Geisinger Medical Center as an administrative supervisor. She also worked at Divine Providence Hospital, Lycoming County Prison, Wise Options for Women and White Deer Koala Drug and Alcohol Rehab.

She was a member of the United Church of Christ, Daughters of the American Revolution, Williamsport Bridge Club, Girl Scouts of America and the Milton Historical Society. She achieved the level of Bridge Life Master.

Her interests included yoga, roller skating and genealogical research. She traveled to Africa, Greece, Morocco, Soviet Union, China, Costa Rica, Egypt, France, Germany, Holland, Alaska and the Galapagos Islands.

Her motto was Perseverance Overcomes All.

She is survived by her two daughters, Leigh Baker and Mindy Chidester; her grandchildren, Brian, Casey and Julie Chidester; and her great grandchild, Andrew Brian Chidester. She is also survived by her son-in-law, Brian Chidester; and her grandson’s wife, Colleen Chidester. Her surviving nieces and nephews include Nancy Ihnotic and Jill, Mark, Brooke and Judy Tymeson.

Services will be held at the United Church of Christ Valley Forge, 45 Walker Road, Wayne, on March 3 at 11 a.m. The family will receive visitors after the service at the church.

A graveside service will be held at Montoursville Cemetery at a later date for friends that are unable to attend the service on March 3.
