James M. Sones Jr.
James M. “Tootie” Sones Jr., 84, of Hughesville, quietly passed away at home on Oct. 9, 2017, after a long hard fought battle with cancer, with his family and friends at his side.
Born Sept. 29, 1933, he was the son of James M. “Peck” Sones and Emma (Fritz) Sones of Sonestown.
James attended school in Sullivan County and during that time he worked for Robert Armstrong and Marquardt Logging. James also worked for Montour Auto Service during the winter months delivering oil and gas. He retired at the age of 60 with 38 years of service from Hanson as Superintendent of the Lime Bluff Stone Quarry in Muncy. He was a member of the Muncy Valley Area Volunteer Fire Company receiving an Honorary 50 year award. James was also a founding member of the Glen Mawr Lions Club, now the Picture Rocks Lions Club, as-well-as the Picture Rocks Volunteer Fire Department. He was an avid hunter and trapper and a longtime member of the Royal Gunning Club in Sonestown. Most of all he loved working around his home.
James is survived by his wife of 61 years, Alfreda M. “Petie” (Minnier) Sones; a daughter, Terri (Daniel) Miley; a son, James C. Sones; two granddaughters, Ashley Brown and Christina Sones; two great-grandchildren, Abigail Brown and Carter Brown, all of Hughesville; and a brother, Robert (Charlotte) Sones, of Muncy Valley.
James was preceded in death by his parents, James Sr. and Emma Sones; three sisters, Beatrice “Sissy” Sperry, Marjorie “Toots” Steinruck and Betty Houseknecht; and five brothers, Carl “Gene” Sones, Marvin “Dick” Sones, Jackie “Jack” Sones, Donald “Donnie” Sones and Harold “Punk” Sones.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, October 13, at McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, with Mary Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, Sonestown. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family requests casual dress for the viewing and funeral, as James was not a formal person.
