Grant L. Smith
Grant L. Smith, 92, of Hughesville, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2017, at Wolf Run Village.
He was preceded in death by his wife Emily G. (Grittner) Smith on August 2, 1983.
Born Sept. 30, 1925, in Franklin Township, Lycoming County, he is the son of the late Chester H. and Lillie A. (Gardner) Smith.
Grant was a 1944 Graduate of Hughesville High School. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in the 507th Parachute Infantry, 17th Airborne Division. He parachuted into Germany in the Rhineland of Central Europe. Grant received a Purple Heart as a result of his service. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a Supervisor at Schnadig Corporation of Montoursville. He was member of Muncy Lodge No. 299 F. & A.M., the Antique Automobile Association of Lycoming County for many years, and the Mercury Club. He attended many car shows with his 1965 Mercury Park Lane, which is now in England. Grant enjoyed bowling, fishing and going to car shows.
Surviving is his long-time companion and friend, Phyllis Weikel, of Hughesville; a daughter, Ellen D. (John Jr.) Wise, of Mansfield; a son, Wayne A. (Cookie) Smith, of Muncy; four grandchildren, Kevin W. (Shelley) Smith, Kristen D. (Tom) D’Angelo, Sarah T. (Andy Englehart) Wise; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by five brothers, Raymond, Howard, Lawrence, Sylvester, Charles Smith; four sisters, Irene Berger, Beulah Christ, Stella Oplinger, and Mildred Smith.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 10, at McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, with Rev. Cinda J. Brucker officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Hughesville, with military graveside honors by combined veteran’s organizations. Friends may call from 10-11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, where a masonic funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. by Muncy Lodge No. 299 F. & A.M.
