M. Maxine Giles

M. Maxine Giles, 96, formerly of Montoursville, passed away Monday, Nov. 6, 2017, at the Williamsport Home. She was born May 23, 1921, in Williamsport, the daughter of Raymond T. and Georgie Swartz Miller.

She graduated from St. Joseph High School, class of 1939. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Montoursville for 66 years and had been a member in both its Alter and Rosary Societies. Before her declining health, her interests were her children’s and grandchildren’s sports activities, especially Montoursville Baseball. She enjoyed volunteering for bingo at her church; her card club and her pets.

On May 19, 1944, she married Carter L. “Pap” Giles Sr. in Annunciation Catholic Church in Williamsport. He preceded her in death on Feb. 6, 1984.

In addition to her husband she was predeceased by her parents; brother, Raymond Miller; and daughter-in-law, Joan Giles.

She is survived by her sons, Carter L. Giles Jr., of Darby, Mont. and William T. (Terry) Giles Sr., of Nisbet; her grandchildren, Carter L. (Holly) Giles, III, Nancy Rae (Steven) Flutcher, Eric Giles, Nickole Giles, Tracie (Mitch) Christensen and William T. Giles, Jr.; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and nephews, Wayne (Peggy) Miller, of Montoursville and William (Sandy) Wright, of Reston, Va.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 13, 2017, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 100 Walnut St., Montoursville, with the Rev. Michael S. McCormick as Celebrant. Interment will follow in Wildwood Cemetery. A viewing for family and friends will be held Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Spitler Funeral Home, 733 Broad St., Montoursville.
