Our treasured father, grandfather and friend, Max E. Phelps, 90, of Cogan Station, passed away Thursday, Nov. 9, 2017, at his home.

Born June 1, 1927, in Williamsport, he was a son of the late Miles E. and Carmen E. Winters Phelps.

Max graduated from the Hepburn Consolidated High School in 1945 and attended Penn State Mont Alto for forestry. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Conserver. Max retired from Lycoming Construction and from Hempt Brothers Construction in Camp Hill.

Max was a member of American Legion Post 1 and Berwick Elks Club No. 1138. He was an outdoorsman and nature enthusiast. Max enjoyed fly fishing, hunting, golfing, reading and spending time with his family.

Surviving are four children, Kelli Eckard-Beiter and Kevin W. Eckard, both of Cogan Station, Laurel A. (Anton) Leach and David G. (Shelia) Phelps, both of Berwick; six grandchildren, Brian, Chelsea, Becca, Hayden, Noah and Ethan; a brother, Keith Phelps, of Washington; a sister, Sandra Downs, of Montoursville.

In addition to his parents, Max was preceded in death by his wife of thirty years, Diane M. Phelps on Jan. 9, 2013; and a brother, Robert Phelps.

A viewing will be held Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Sanders Mortuary, 821 Diamond St., Williamsport. Burial will be in Bloomingrove Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
