Donald Lee Shafer

Mr. Donald Lee Shafer, 88, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away on Wednesday, April 4, 2018, at his residence.

He was born on August 31, 1929, in Watsontown, Pa., to the late Ralph and Lena (Rupert) Shafer.

Mr. Shafer attended Lycoming College in Williamsport. In 1951 he married Miriam E. Ulmer and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served honorably in the Korean Conflict.

Donald and Miriam discovered Amelia Island in the mid 90’s after retirement. Three years of “wintering” led to full-time residence in 1998.

He was a spiritual man, attending the Memorial United Methodist Church in Fernandina Beach, where he enjoyed the church socials and the fellowship they offered.

Mr. Shafer was a loving husband and father and enjoyed spending time with his family. In quieter times, he could always be found reading a good book.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Laura Shafer in 2009.

Mr. Shafer leaves behind his wife of 67 years, Miriam Shafer of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; children: Mark Shafer and his wife Amelia, of Yulee, Fla., Debbie McCafferty, of Yulee, Fla., and Kenneth Shafer and his wife Brenda, of Williamsport; brother, Richard Shafer and his wife Donna, of Birmingham, Ala.; grandchildren, Ryan McCafferty, Shannon McCafferty, Amy Leigh Fehl and her husband Cory.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Donald’s name to the American Heart Association or Memorial United Methodist Church.

Services will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 26, 2018, at the Memorial United Methodist Church in Fernandina Beach.
