Richard ‘Dick’ W. Mathias

Richard “Dick” W. Mathias, 82, of Montoursville, died on Feb. 7, 2019, at Muncy Valley Hospital.

He was born May 17, 1936, in Milton, a son of the late Caldwell and Hazel (Sheffer) Mathias.

Dick was a graduate of Milton High School, and served two years in the Marine Corp. He graduated from Lycoming College and Penn State University, with a master’s degree in education and was part of the Alumni Association there. He taught at Montoursville Elementary, the former Jefferson Elementary School, and then became principal at Lewis Township School.

He was a member of Montoursville Presbyterian Church, where he served on the session and sang in the choir for 30 years. He was a member of the Eureka Masonic Lodge 335, Wheel Inn, Loyalsock Creek Men’s Club, and volunteered at Camp Dost.

He enjoyed woodworking, photography, fishing, family and the outdoors.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Rev. Charles Frederick Mathias.

Surviving him are his wife, of 61 years, the former Beverly Current; a son, Scott (Jessica) Mathias; a daughter, Susan (Everett) Prindle; and two granddaughters, Rebecca A. Fortney and Jennifer L. Fortney.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Montoursville Presbyterian Church, 900 Elm St., Montoursville, with Rev. David C. Smith officiating. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

Family and friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, at the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the church.
