William Henry Flayhart III
Dr. William Henry Flayhart III, 74, of Dover, Del., died on Jan. 26, 2019. A son of the late William Henry Flayhart and Naomi Flayhart, he was born in Williamsport on July 12, 1944. Bill graduated from Williamsport High School in 1962 and received his bachelor’s degree in history at Lycoming College. He received his master’s and doctoral degrees in history from the University of Virginia.
He was professor emeritus of history at Delaware State University where he taught from 1970 until his retirement in 2009. A distinguished scholar, he specialized in maritime history and was the author or co-author of six books. Bill traveled extensively by sea and presented numerous lectures on maritime and world history while aboard ship. He also lectured in the Delaware area.
Bill was active in the Kiwanis Club of Dover, was past president of the Friends of Old Dover, and served as an Elder of the Presbyterian Church of Dover.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah Flayhart, of Dover; son, Thomas Flayhart (Amy), of Townsend, Del.; daughter, Catherine Collins (Dwight), of San Diego; and daughter, Jennifer Keller (Matthew), of Edmonds, Wash. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Taylor Flayhart, Spencer Flayhart, Topper Collins and Emma Keller; and his brother, Martin Flayhart (Gale), of Cogan Station.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 11 a.m., at the Presbyterian Church of Dover, 54 S. State St., Dover.
