Brodart warehouse housing moves forward

The tax credits so important to public/private ventures in the 21st Century have been obtained for the 40-apartment housing project at the former Brodart warehouse on Memorial Avenue in Williamsport.

That would seem to clear a path for construction of the low- and moderate-income family housing, a sorely-needed commodity in the city.

In the keen competition for the tax credits from the state Housing Finance Agency, developers of senior housing at Mulberry Street and Via Bella and the Grove Street Commons on the grounds of the former National Guard armory were less fortunate.

They lost out and will have to reapply for the next round of grants.

In the meantime, demolition and remediation bids for the former Brodart warehouse are due May 2. After that, the project should be good to go.

In a glass-half-full world, one out of three tax credit applications to the state represents a decent batting average.
