The ultime Route220 solution has little to do with engineering
Fixing the Route 220 stretch of highway just west of Williamsport, perhaps the most dangerous road in the region, is a goal with unanimous backing.
But when a public meeting was held by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Tuesday regarding a safety study on the highway, a consensus on the best solution was hard to come by.
Lower speed limits and traffic lights are not surefire cure they are often purported to be, according to officials.
Other possible solutions presented at the meeting included acceleration and deceleration lanes, jug handles and J-turns.
Wider acceleration lanes and jug-handle turns seemed to carry the most weight with those at the meeting.
But the best solution has little to do with engineering safe, sober and slower driving and the more frequent wearing of seat belts.
