Merger could be the answer for three vital groups
It’s not just any kind of a summer program.
Far from it, the summer program being offered jointly by STEP Inc., The Campbell Street Family, Youth and Community Association and Community Alliance for Progressive Positive Action could be the start of something much bigger.
The three groups are teaming up to present Summer Counts!, an eight-week program through which they are looking to serve 100 children.
Students are being split into two groups, one with The Center and the other with CAPPA, The Center providing recreation and nutrition and CAPPA focusing on education.
Meanwhile, STEP Inc. is working on the administrative and financial aspects of the program.
As a result of the joint planning, the organizations are looking to see if they can merge and function year-round as one unit.
In our view that is an exciting initiative for all three organizations to consider. All three offer important services to some critical parts of the community that need educational, recreational and socialization opportunities. The financial capability to provide those needs is always a challenge. And frankly, The Center has been teetering on the edge of oblivion for several years.
If a merger of the three groups helps all of them meet their missions, we hope it is seriously considered and the community supports it.
