District selloff of former schools showing promise

One of the reasons school building decisions building, renovation and closing are so important is that it’s difficult to get revenue from them if they are no longer usable.

The Williamsport Area School District is testing that theory with some success. The district recently auctioned off the former Woodward Township Elementary School for $220,000 and the Sheridan Elementary School for $435,000. It auctioned off the former Round Hills Elementary School for $520,000 last wee.

Revenue is revenue and the district can certainly use it.

There is nothing worse than a vacant building with no prospects. They are disasters waiting to happen that leave a negative impression on an area. The purchase gets the buildings on the tax rolls.

And ultimately, if purchasers find a viable reuse for the buildings, this move could be a complete success.
