Revitalization group for city’s east end makes practical sense
There appears to be ever-gathering momentum to develop the City of Williamsport’s Central Business District east of Market Street.
Consultants were recently given the go-ahead to study potential development of that area. Last week the East Third Street Gateway Revitalization Commission was approved by City Council.
The commission would be responsible for leading redevelopment from Penn Street east toward Catherine Street, including an extension of the Golden Strip in Loyalsock Township.
A renaissance is envisioned. Growth spurred by the Marcellus Shale industries are being pinpointed as the primary conductor of development, particularly from Penn Street to Loyalsock Township.
The future holds the true answer whether all this momentum can lead to real commercial growth in the eastern business district.
Many of the people on this commission already have invested millions of dollars in restaurants and stores locally. They have a proven track record of successful development and said last week they are willing to invest more.
What’s needed now is a plan that can spur real investment in practical plans for the city’s eastern business district. We would recommend that expansion of the Golden Strip area proceed with caution, as that area already is congested.
The first step was city approval of this commission. The rest lies in the future, but the goals and objectives are spot-on.
