The Taliban – If they fool us twice, shame on us
We Americans seem to be viewed as suckers by many of our enemies. And why not? We strike trust-us deals with an Iranian regime operating under the motto, “Death to America.” For decades we trusted North Korea to refrain from developing nuclear weapons.
For more than a year before the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, we even believed the Taliban regime of Afghanistan might turn Osama bin Laden over to us.
And now, with the Taliban bidding to re-take power violently in Afghanistan, we may be ready to sit down with them again.
During testimony before Congress this week, Gen. John F. Campbell, the top?U.S. military leader in Afghanistan, suggested peace talks with the Taliban may be possible. He cautioned the organization is somewhat fragmented, so it may “take a good couple of months before we see them coming back to any kind of peace negotiation.”
Have we lost our minds? Giving the Taliban any measure of trust is, in a word, crazy.
Is the new Taliban leadership less brutally fanatical than in the past??Possibly – but the presence of al-Qaida elements in the Taliban army argues against that.
The Taliban fooled us once. If we allow them to fool – and in all likelihood, kill – us again, then shame on us.
