WASD preliminary budget numbers are too scary to remain

The business manager of the Williamsport Area School District says the district is looking at a $2.6 million deficit in its preliminary budget for 2017-18. The district’s fiscal year ends June 30, so at this point the deficit is a number on a paper. No more. No less.

Early numbers are necessary to meet a requirement for a preliminary budget approval before Feb. 16. Nevertheless, projections of $88.2 million in revenues against $90.8 million in estimated expenditures are scary.

We hope those in a position to make those numbers equal by June 30 understand that the preliminary numbers have to change. If the revenue number does not come up, the expense number has to come down. Taxpayers in the district can’t afford the hit that would be necessary to bridge a $2.6 million budget deficit.
