Bill properly separates public union dues from political preferences

Public-sector union employees should not be paying a portion of their dues for political action committee contributions that may or may not match their political preferences.

That sounds simple, but it’s not.

The Republican-controlled Senate recently voted 28-22 to send a bill regarding that issue to the state House.

The bill would bar the state, school districts and local government employers from deducting any portion of union dues that underwrite political activity and union political action committee contributions from the paychecks of unionized workers.

The bill would limit deductions to pay for contract negotiation costs and other non-political activity.

That’s as it should be. The dues of workers are meant to benefit them, not the preferences – whatever they may be – of political action committees.
