At long last, Grafius Run flood control work moves forward

When the heavy rains hit Williamsport, the debris from trees that populate the Grafius Run area becomes trapped in trash racks, flooding the streets that are in the run’s path.

The problem is worsened by deteriorating pipes meant to channel water to the river. The result is seepage and groundwater infiltration into basements and nearby residences.

This has been going on for decades.

At long last, there is a real effort under way to change that.

City Council, on the recommendation of its public works committee, last week approved the hiring of engineering firm RETTEW to conduct a flood mitigation project on the Grafius Run watershed.

Part of the engineer’s contract involves three public meetings to discuss the work. We suspect the public may let the engineers know this is long-overdue work.
