State budget increase in school safety warranted if focus is correct

Pennsylvania appears to be well on the road to election year budget peace.

While we are under no illusions that this goes very far beyond political necessity for both major political parties, we are heartened by one aspect of the 2018-19 state budget.

It calls for increased spending on school safety in our public schools.

That’s one spending increase we won’t quarrel with, though we hope the details behind the spending increase are practical deterrents, not bureaucracy creation.

We need real safety measures at our schools that involve criminal justice professionals and well-attended entrances to buildings. That’s where the money needs to be spent.
