Despite pulling out of climate accord, U.S. making progress on goals

German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s timing in lambasting President Donald Trump for pulling the United States out of the Paris climate accords could have been better.

Recently, Merkel, saying climate change is “a fact,” called Trump’s decision “very regrettable.”

Just days before, however, embarrassed German officials had to admit they could not meet their goal of cutting emissions by 40 percent by 2020. It will take another decade, they admitted.

Meanwhile, U.S. industries continue to make progress. During the most recent decade measured, total carbon emissions dropped from 7.2 billion tons to 6.6 billion tons here.

We are making progress — despite what critics like Merkel, who cannot meet their own goals, would like to claim.
