Veterans wall of monuments answers desperate need to remember our history
Call it our Great Wall.
Construction of the wall of monuments of all U.S. wars before the 20th century is progressing quickly at Veterans Memorial Park, West Fourth Street and Wahoo Drive, augmented by a contribution by Pennsylvania College of Technology students and donations of materials and equipment tamping down the overall cost.
Those contributions are lowering the cost substantially from what it would cost if it were put out to bid – $156,000.
The result is that the wall won’t cost a dime in taxpayer money.
The black granite monuments will spotlight the American Revolution, War of 1812, United Indian War, Mexican War, Civil War and the Spanish-American War.
At a time when our country’s heritage and history are being forgotten or demeaned, this wall will help us remember. We desperately need that.
Special praise is due those who conceived of and executed the plan for the wall of monuments.
