Re: killing babies
In his op-ed piece “What would the babies say”, Bill O’Reilly “is puzzled that liberal people are so callous when it comes to aborting fetuses”. He criticizes Mary Elizabeth Williams, a Catholic, for her statement “all life is not equal”. Ms. Williams believes that life starts at conception but that doesn’t mean the fetus has the same right as the woman in whose body it resides. “Her life and what is right for her circumstances and her health should automatically trump the rights of the non-autonomous entity inside of her”. Her honest, realistic stance on this issue is admirable and courageous.
Mr. O’Reilly, how about all the innocent people, including children, killed in war? Our government has recently killed many innocent people (albeit unintentionally) in Iraq and Afghanistan. In fact, this killing of innocent civilians while pursuing ‘dangerous militants’ in Afghanistan and Pakistan has reaped tremendous anger toward our country. Our government, while lamenting the loss of innocent lives, justifies these attacks as necessary to protect our nation’s citizens from dangerous threats. How is this different than a woman choosing to end a pregnancy because it threatens her well being or her life? In the seventies I did reproductive health counseling with women and I never encountered a woman who casually decided to end a pregnancy.
A more humane, understanding and sensible approach is to make birth control available to all women rather than condemning women who choose to end their unwanted pregnancies. Mr. O’Reilly, do you support that?
