Manners, please

Most of the time, I really enjoy reading the letters that local people write into the Sun-Gazette. There are a wide variety of political views on display. I like to “put myself in the shoes” of whoever is writing in. I may agree with conservatives on somethings and take the side of liberals on others.

The only thing that bothers me is when people become uncivil by attacking each others’ characters. Please, no name calling. Ad hominem arguments are cowardly. Name calling is a cheap way to end any real, challenging debates. It is OK to have any political view in the United States of America. That’s what the First Amendment guarantees. Please, try to listen to people who challenge conventional views rather than censor them with name calling. It’s more American than apple pie.
