Baloney on Obamacare
A recent letter titled “Obamacare’s hidden tax” is based on misinformation still being spread by a thoroughly debunked viral email. The letter states: “What is the medical device excise tax now in effect? The tax is 2.3 percent of the sale price of the taxable medical device. This includes: Bows, quivers, broadheads, and points; arrow shafts; coal; taxable tires; gas guzzler automobiles; and vaccines…”
The truth is that not a single item the author names will be subject to a 2.3 percent tax or taxed in any way under Obamacare. The sorts of things that will be taxed include pacemakers, coronary stents, wheelchairs, dental equipment, artificial knees and hips, and advanced imaging technology (MRI and CAT scan equipment). These taxes will all be paid by manufacturers and importers, not consumers. Items in common use like eyeglasses, contact lenses, and hearing aids will not be subject to the tax. Insurance companies are required to cover vaccinations for free, since preventive medicine saves money (as well as health and life) in the long run.
Taxes on archery equipment, coal, certain tires, and gas guzzlers are excise taxes that PRE-DATE both President Obama and the Affordable Care Act. The taxes on archery equipment were instituted in 1975 to help pay for the Wildlife Restoration Act. One might disagree with those taxes, but they have nothing whatsoever to do with Obamacare.
