In the Friday letters there is, what I think is, an ignorant and offensive letter concerning a picture of newly drafted NFL player Michael Sam kissing his boyfriend. Aside from sharing his homophobic views, Mr. Seevers closes his letter with the sarcastic question, “But we all know God is a bigot, Right?” A bigot is someone who “strongly or unfairly dislikes or refuses to accept the members of a particular group (such as a racial or religious group).” If you believe the Bible is the word of God, or even just man’s word inspired by God, then decide for yourself if God is a bigot.

In Deuteronomy, God tells the Israelites to kill another ethnic group that is living in the Promised Land. In Nehemiah, He tells them they are not allowed to marry any other ethnicities or cultures. By now, I think we all know the Bible thinks homosexuality is a sin punishable by death. God also thinks women are not equal to men in His eyes (Corinthians). And the Ten Commandments make is perfectly clear that God does not like any other religions. These are just a few select examples.

So, does God strongly or unfairly dislike or refuse to accept members of a particular group? Of course he does; of course he’s a bigot! The real question is if we, modern people living in the 21st century, truly believe the Bible is the word of God (literal or inspired). Or, do you think men (and women) of today (scholars, theologians, or laypeople) are able to tease out what God really meant in light of the New Testament and other modern schools of thought?
