A Sunday section on religion is one thing
The Fourth’s banner headline on the front page reading “GOD BLESS AMERICA” against a colorful and celebratory backdrop is quite another. Is the Sun-Gazette a journalistic entity or a cheerleader for organized (and often politicized) Christianity? Is such an expression of provincial religiosity in the broad public interest in the 21st century? What would Thomas Paine or Jefferson or Lincoln or JFK or Protestant theologian and “public intellectual” Reinhold Niebuhr have to say?
