In a recent letter, I questioned the idea that America is exceptional and described the history of our country as “a mixed bag, filled with examples of great service and sacrifice for others, as well as incredible selfishness and cruelty.”
The responses in subsequent letters to the editor have been quite interesting. According to those letters, I am a liberal, and therefore incapable of saying anything good about our country. They must have missed the “great service and sacrifice for others” part of my letter.
Pointing out that the history of our country has been quite ugly at times does not mean I am putting America down. Instead, when it comes to our country’s history, I believe we have to acknowledge the good and the bad in order to have a mature, realistic understanding of ourselves, and how we fit into the world around us.
