Playing on fear

Your editorial Feb. 13 supported the Republican administrations “travel ban.” You are using “Trump Talk” when you say that this “effort” was started by President Obama and only formalized by Trump. Obama ordered special attention for these countries, but there was never any idea to ban travel. That was all Trump’s or maybe Bannon’s.

Murder is at an all-time high. The Muslims, or is it the Mexican drug gangs, are coming to kill us all. This is the politics of fear and hate. Stephen Miller, the guy with the dead eyes, was on all the Sunday talk shows repeating this over and over. If you say something often enough it has to be true. Doesn’t it?

It was icy out yesterday, but even on a nice day I would have a better chance of dying in a traffic accident on the way to church than of being killed by an Islamic terrorist or Mexican drug gang. None of the 9/11 terrorists, or the terrorists who killed people anywhere else in this country, came from any of the banned countries. Trump says that we can’t let these people in because the countries are unstable. Refugees don’t come from stable countries; they come from war zones. Our vetting of refugees has worked fine for the past eight years. Trump and his friends are playing on fear for an agenda that is very different from what they say it is.
