An interesting year

1919 was an interesting year of Bradford County in that we did not have a parade for the returning troops from World War One. That was the same year that 20+ newspapers and trade journals reported that a meteorite viewed from Washington, D.C. to Towanda’s reservoir on Old Plank Road.

It blasted a 20-foot hole through 8″ of ice and then melted 5 inches of it. Later on that year the headlines spoke of Towanda suffering from shortages of ice not harvested in January!

For the money, you would think we could, by now, have a few signs up taking pride in solving the 1950 Brinks robbery, where the song “Mr. Sandman” was written, where a large meteorite disrupted our summer ice supply , where the 1964 elephant stampede took place, where Buffalo Bill and John Phillip Sousa stood on Main Street.

But I know that is expecting too much to expect more than a sign about Steven Foster. Can you imagine holding an annual “River Fest” with no use of the river for canoe and kayak races to raise money for good cause. About the only thing we can spend money on is polluting the atmosphere with heavy metals during our fireworks display. God knows I enjoy them too, but when all the pollution settles into the Susquehanna and our lungs what do we have to show for this expense?
