In the days when we had just two-lane highways, landline telephones and cars that might get up to 55 mph city residency requirements might have made sense.
But today we can travel from Hughesville to Williamsport on 4-lane highways at 70+ mph in less than 13 minutes and be in constant communication the whole time.
The issue isn’t about “loyalty” or requiring city employees to live in the city.
It’s about making the city a place where employees want to live and raise their families.
Now, if you really need to talk seriously about residency requirements then talk about requiring those elected officials who decide how many taxes you pay for your home or business to actually demonstrate that they own a home or business in the city so they share the tax burden they impose on you.
That would be an interesting discussion for a City Council ad hoc committee.
