Unfair penalties

There a few things going on in this country that should never be allowed to happen and the common, law-abiding citizens who are old and retired are paying the price. It is downright inhuman for the insurances in this country, when they sell their automobile insurance to those who become licensed drivers in their teens, which is required by a Pennsylvania Law.

The case in question concerns a retired 80-year-old woman living alone who depends very much on driving her automobile, which is a necessity in this day and age. After paying for this insurance coverage for 55 years and never making a claim for an accident, she recently had two minor accidents which totaled $2,000 all together. Because of these minor accidents, they are more than doubling her insurance.

She cannot afford such an increase but if she lets it expire the state would take her drivers license. This lady and myself have paid 50,000 dollars to these insurance companies over a period of the last 62 years. The purpose of having insurance by vast numbers of people is if one has an accident, everyone pays the bill and with the high premiums which we pay, there is always plenty of money left to the insurance companies to make a profit. If this profit isn’t large enough they take the liberty to raise the insurance premiums.

We, as individuals, help the more unfortunate drivers who do have insurance and there is plenty of money in the kitty to cover anything that the insurance companies profit with the premiums paid by we the customers of all the insurance companies.

I am 85 years old and have had insurance with State Farm for the past 62 years and I have paid around $60,000. I have both automobile and homeowners insurance with State Farm, and I have never complained nor has State Farm, because I never filed a claim against them.

In reference to the 80- year-old lady that I mentioned earlier, she also has had her insurance with Erie Insurance for 55 years. I speak out against anything that is detrimental to my beliefs. In this case, it is very harmful and injurious to an 80-year-old lady who is simply trying to exist.

This is nothing less than legalized robbery. Business in America is what made it a great country. In the world today, including America, the almighty dollar has replaced common sense and policies are destroying the well-being of the senior citizens on social security in our country.

It’s about time our elected officials in Harrisburg and Washington, D.C. open their eyes and start doing something for the loyal citizens of America including the veterans and the elderly of this nation.
