Employers and jobs

We are really talking about millennials and college graduates seeking employment and getting employment. When talking about millennials one can get confused because they come in groups. The most recent bunch range from 18 to 35 years of age. The previous segment are the “baby boomers” and the next being the World War II veterans and that age group. Now reaching 80 million, they are the largest cohort in American history.

Last year the younger millennials identified with the Democrats (55 percent) and 34 percent with Republicans. The younger group are pro-legalization of marijuana, living together, even having kids without being married. They shop online more than any other generation and are tech savvy. Surveys show that in the next 10-20 years they will dominate the nation’s economy, government and politics. The younger group of millennials are quite liberal but may deign to become conservative as they get older, much like their previous generations. The nexus right now is that they are a real harvest for the Democratic Party.

Getting to employment, the older group have been on their jobs 15 to 30 years. They like their jobs, company and fellow employees. Many could retire but they are happy where they are now. They take overtime (time and one-half) when offered to them.

I have two daughters. They graduated from Bloomsburg University with A’s and B’s in athletic training. They expected to get offers of $40,000 or close. They sent applications out, networked hard and got two offers, from Susquehanna and Bucknell, at $11,000 and $12,000. They were in tears, not what they expected. I told them they should take them, that they were good offers. I said that it would be excellent for their resumes and they could live together and network during their first year or two and find a better salaried job. In one year, one got a better salary and the other doubled hers.

Some millennials know what they have by staying on their job rather than the unknown of retirement. It’s a choice.
