Making his own mess
A recent writer decried a lack of respect for the presidency on the part of the president’s detractors. In fact, President Trump has befouled his own nest time and again with word and deed. His tweets alone from the revolving-door White House have enlightened none, confounded many, and made his office the laughing stock of friend and foe alike.
Journalist and editor H. L. Mencken, “The Sage of Baltimore,” proved prescient when he wrote in The Baltimore Evening Sun in 1920, “As democracy is perfected, the office of the President represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last, and the White House will be occupied by a downright fool and complete narcissistic moron.”
