Changing times

Back in the day, when I was going to grade school in the late 1940s and early 1950s, in one- and two-room schoolhouses that probably our grandparents went to, we did not have fans or air conditioning. I am sure we had mold, mice and even some snakes crawling around inside the school buildings.

We had to share books and desks with other students, and if we didn’t give the right answer when the teacher asked a question, we had to stay in at recess and wash the windows. To add insult to injury, some of us had to walk three miles to school, in snow knee-deep. And our teacher did not want to hear excuses if we were late.
