Minimum wage hike overdue

The Pennsylvania Legislature is considering the governor’s proposal to raise the state minimum wage, which has been $7.25 per hour since 2010.

A 40-hour week minimum wage job, with no time off for 52 weeks, has paid $15,080 per year all this time.

In 2010, the base salary for Pennsylvania legislators, set by themselves, was $78,314.66. In 2019, it is $88,610. Clearly, they understand that the cost of living has risen. New York, New Jersey, Ohio and Maryland, states that border Pennsylvania, all have minimum wages at least $1.30 per hour higher than ours.

Their employment rates are similar to ours, so their higher minimum wages are not putting their employers out of business. Isn’t it time our legislators to do unto our hard working poor citizens as they have so generously done unto themselves?
