Drug of choice?

Recently someone said to me that Trump is certain voters’ drug of choice.

Naturally I needed the person to explain what they meant. This is how I understood it: Some American citizens have need of a drug to take their pain away. Perhaps lack of education is leaving them behind, or family is falling apart or they just can’t seem to get ahead, you name it. Trump tells them what they want to hear. His words might not be accurate but the person needs to hear something to take the pain away. The voter (user) may know that Trump is probably not good for them but just can’t help it. He is their “fix.”

“Interesting,” I said.

I would be interested what other readers thought.
