City Councilman Marty says he’s passing on re-election bid

City Councilman Patrick Marty announced late Monday he will not seek re-election to a second four-year term.
Marty, a Democrat, said he will serve out the final year of his term and issued a prepared statement saying he has been “honored to serve (his) adopted community.”
Marty won election to the council seat vacated by the retiring Dr. Randall F. Hipple in 2005. He chairs the Public Works Committee and is a member of the Blighted Property Review Board and Finance, Economic Revitalization and Historic Preservation committees.

Veteran's Day message

Though it is a little late to write this, I feel I must respond to the post attached to my last blog. I had the honor of attending two Veteran's Day events this past week, and also to speak with the young wife of a soldier who is returning home from nearly a year in Afghanistan, where he went voluntarily to defend his country. Contrary to Flannery's post, these young men and women don't consider the reason they are there because of "one man's ego," referring to Pres. Bush. Rather, what I have heard and seen in the years since this war began in 2003 is just the opposite. They feel, almost all of them, that they are over there to serve and protect this nation, and that they have a job to do and are doing it. They feel that they are accomplishing their goal, and rehabilitating the people of Iraq, as well as winning in Afghanistan, though it is a bit tougher for them there because of the rugged terrain.

December The twelfth and last month of the Gregorian Calendar and one of seven of its months with 31 days. It is the month of the year with the shortest daylight hours in the Northern Hemisphere and the longest daylight hours in the Southern Hemisphere. It is also a month of holiday merriment and rejoicing. No less than three religious or cultural holidays take place during December and are celebrated world-wide – Christmas & Hanukkah, both religious celebration days and Kwanzaa a cultural celebration. Christmas has been observed for centuries and date of December 25th is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ in the Christian faith. The date is fraught with suggestions of inaccuracy, but remains the traditional date to celebrate the birth of the Christians’ savior.

Closing down the house

The New York Times ran a story on the cover of Friday morning's weekend entertainment section about the closing of one legendary TriBeCa venue and the opening of another with shows within a stone's throw of one another on New Year's Eve. Performers at both of the Manhattan venues have played shows here in Williamsport in years gone by. Of course I speak about Akron/Family, which last year performed with Rhys Chatham's Les 100 Guitares at the Community Arts Center, and in years prior to their signing with Young God Records did a number of shows around town, including the Bullfrog. The other performer, Joan Osborne, did a show at Franco's way back before her first Grammy ... I was in the audience that night and well remember seeing a great artist in the cozy club where it was a wonder that the musicians had room to move. Yet it hopped, all the way back to the kitchen.

How is the bottle standing up in recession?

A 5-percent spike in Pennsylvania's alcohol sales, reported by the Patriot News of Harrisburg, is re-igniting debate over whether alcohol consumption is recession-proof. David J. Hanson, a retired sociology professor, tells the Patriot News' Ford Turner that complexities make assigning correlation between alcohol sales and overall economic conditions difficult. However, Robert J. Pandina of the Center for Alcohol Studies at Rutgers, tells the Patriot News that "There is, in downturn times, data that supports the fact that there is an increase in sales." The disagreement led me to look wider. The Web site of Washington state's Yakima Herald reports the Evergreen State is also seeing about a 5-percent increase in sales. The Long Island Business News reports liquor store owners are seeing a shift to less-expensive brands but, while hard liquor sales are flat, wine and beer sales saw a 4.5 percent increase.

It may have not cross your mind in the middle of the day, but have you ever thought, “What happened to that kid that was caned in Singapore?” How embarrassing, how deserving! Well found this great web site that updates where the Top 40 Greatest Icons in Pop Culture were and are now. Info on Kato Kalin; Baby Jessica, the well baby…man I barely remember watching that one unfold on TV; The Price is Right spokes-ladies; good ol’ girl Tonya Harding (scary), and of course Spuds Mackenzie, I still have a stuffed animal of him! Check out blog links for more!!! Found this great blog about “The Worst Band Names Ever.” OK, listen even if you do like their music, you have to admit some of their names are pretty bad. The blog pokes fun at all genres of music, even rap.

Another year ...

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! So sorry for the delay in updating my blog. The holiday season has kept me on my toes, to say the least. But what a wonderful time spent with family. Christmas day was a bit more relaxed than planned (one visit was eliminated when my brother and his youngest son were hit with the stomach bug and another was postponed after our car spun six times down an icy hill near my mother's home. Needless to say, we went home). While I can't say I enjoyed not visiting with my family (I missed them like crazy), my husband, daughter, son and I had a great time getting home early and playing with all of our toys. And to make up for not seeing my brother and his family and my mom and her family, we decided to welcome the new year together by getting together at my brother's house for snacks, Christmas presents and some laughs. It was a memorable time.

Horseradish Honey Ham Where I got the recipe: allrecipes.com Tools you'll need: Baking pan, knife, kitchen string, measuring cup, measuring spoon. Ingredients: Five lbs. boneless cooked ham 1/4 cup honey, warmed 1/8 tsp ground cloves 1 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 cup prepared horseradish 1/4 cup lemon juice When I made it: Sunday I got a free ham for missing only one meeting at the Polish Club this year, so I needed to find a few recipes to use it up. This is the first one I've tried so far, and it turned out well.
