Stoppage time

POSTED:Fri, February 29, 2008 @ 1:27PM

Friday's Friday

Last time I talked to Lyco hoops coach Don Friday during a non-game day, I dragged him out of the steam room after Tuesday's practice.

Now that he's conference coach of the year, I have to make an appoinment. I'm meeting him in his office today at 3, and you can look for a preview on tomorrow's Commonwealth Championship game in Saturday morning's paper. Hope to have some material from the players, too, but we'll see.

In all seriousness, Friday was the only choice, especially after the Warriors were picked 5th in the league's preseason conference poll. Glad to see him get it, especially after turning around what was developing into a troubling season in December, with a team that had everybody back from last year — plus transferred guard Eric Anthony — hovering at 5-5.

Elsewhere, Lyco players received their conference honors, with things going about as expected, as did Widener's.

As for the rookie of the year award, they really should just call it the freshman of the year to avoid confusion. Branden Washington is probably a great player — i've only seen him once — but technically Lyco's Eric Anthony would be a rookie too, no?

Game time tomorrow set for 3 p.m. Maybe some of the other students will be back by then. The Lyco hoops boosters ... err, the men's lacrosse team ... should be around with a rare gameless Saturday.

Oh, and if the Warriors lose, is there a fringe chance to make it into the wonderfully asymmetrical field of 59 for the D-III tournament? According to D3hoops.com, the Warriors are among the 56 teams in the NCAA's regional rankings, though they are 7th in the mid-atlantic behind league foes widener (3rd) and albright (6th), both with better records. Lyco has the tougher strength of schedule, though. I guess it will depend on how many of these 56 actually lock up automatic berths.

I may be back later with some musings on the passing of Myron Cope. Yeah, I know it's been a couple of days but I've needed the time to think.
