Newspaper Notions
POSTED:Fri, March 14, 2008 @ 5:20PM
Young Minds - New IdeasNIE – Newspapers In Education – What we do to help our children learn. How we go about learning what is going on in the city in which we live, the state, the country, the nation or the world has expanded and broaden so much since my day! And I want to tell you just a little bit about how our youth benefit.. We KNOW that newspapers help students become informed and involved community participants. How do we know this? Our NIE program has been flourishing here in Williamsport and surrounding areas since 1998. This upcoming school year (2008-2009) will be our 10th anniversary and we are proud to have this chance to affect a positive change. Our newspaper can be a dynamic teaching tool in providing the link between textbooks and current events – a means by which students can “get excited” about the world and the community where they live. By providing free newspapers to classrooms from elementary to high school and beyond (Pennsylvania College of Technology too) learning is enriched in reading, history, current events, consumer affairs, ecology and any number of entertainment and cultural opportunities. This program would not be the success it is without the partnering of community-minded businesses and organizations as sponsors. These dedicated and committed sponsors provide the funds to support this reading and learning program and without their commitment to our youth, this program would not be possible. Currently we have 24 various towns from Elkland/Tioga to Sullivan County in the north & south, and from Lock Haven to Turbotville, west to east, receiving the Sun-Gazette. Various schools in these towns receive nearly 1,800 papers that are read and studied by over 8,000 students! Newspapers bring you more detailed information regarding any story in the news than any other media. We provide you with more than just a “sound bite” of the news and with concise and detailed information without repetition. It doesn’t matter your political or sociological viewpoint, you can find a newspaper that agrees or disagrees with your insight and therefore will reward you with plenty of mental fodder and fortitude. The Sun-Gazette’s NIE program, like so many nationwide, is designed and dedicated to strengthening literacy and learning in our communiities for our children. We, along with our sponsors, are proud to be making a difference in our future.
