Tolling families

November 1, 2007 - LLee Janssen

Businesses aren't the only ones who will feel the pinch of tolls along Interstate 80. This will be a tax on families as well.

As children grow older and the brain drain phenomena leads them away from Williamsport, Interstate 80 becomes for many parents -- myself included -- the link that leads to that next hug.

For those of us in rural areas with rural costs of living and rural incomes, scaring up $100 just for gas for a roundtrip visit to the young ones (then add on the costs of a meal and entertainment), the tolls become just another reason why we see less of our offspring.

Come on, now! There are already enough excuses to get in the way of family togetherness! And as this fragmented society continues to evolve, should we really be putting more roadblocks in the path of our young ones making it back this way?

Do you hear the bell tolling ... for whom does it ring now?
