'The Bill Engvall Show'

"The Bill Engvall Show" is set for another season, with episodes at 9 p.m. Thursday nights on TBS. Many of you might know the veteran comedian Engvall from his role in the "Blue Collar Comedy Tour."

Here's my question: With the previews I've seen for this show, is this the best a great comedy station like TBS could come up with?

TBS is known for running syndicated re-runs of classic sitcom comedies like "Seinfeld," "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "The King of Queens." It even has a couple of original comedy shows with promise -- like "My Boys" and "Frank TV" -- but "The Bill Engvall Show" doesn't seem to be one of them.

The jokes are horrible. And they're not even clever or show any sign of originality. I honestly think some of these jokes were used in the very first generic sitcom ever made. Examples:

Engvall: (To his wife while holding a pair of skimpy women's underwear) How come I've never seen you in these?

Nancy Travis: Because they're your daughter's.

Engvall: (As he throws them down) Oh, come on!

This joke or some type of form of this joke is used ridiculously too often. We get it; dad's don't like to think of their daughters wearing thongs and other skimpy lingerie. It's still not funny.

Engvall: Did your ex-wife have a job?

Tim Meadows: Yeh, she was a magician. She made all my money disappear.

Are you kidding me? Not a clever alimony joke. I can almost guarantee Meadows -- a great former member of Saturday Night Live -- is not writing his own lines. They wouldn't be this bad.

Lauren: (To her parents while they are kissing) Please guys, if you're gonna do that, be younger ... and not my parents.

Ooo, a joke about parental PDA -- groundbreaking comedy.

Lauren: What's the difference between a belly button ring and an ear piercing?

Bill: Because when you wear earings, boys look up here (Points to his ears).

Really? I thought earings were to be worn on your toes.

So, you get the point. I'm not impressed at all with the writing. And if you've ever watched an episode (I glimpsed at a couple clips while writing this blog on tbs.com), the acting is just as bad. Engvall's not quite ready to be an actor, and TBS probably was the only station willing to give him a show. I'll give it to the end of this season until it's canceled.

ohh and you must admit that the dialogue exchange in the commericals for "My Boys" are hilarious.... although I have never actually wanted the show.... you can't text shotgun. Oh yeah why did you text shotgun at 9:18?
