Final: Loyalsock 5, Williamsport 2
May 15, 2010 - Chris Masse
11:45 a.m.: A very scary moment for Loyalsock. Three-year starting captain Brian Stopper hustles to second for a bloop double to right field, but appears to aggravate the shoulder that he had to have Tommy John offseason surgery on. Stopper is a three-year captain who has been one of the most valuable players for a team that won the 2008 state championship and reached last year's state semifinals after winning a second straight championship.
11:47: Stopper walks off the field but a person is holding his left shoulder. Hopefully, Stopper will make a full recovery.
11:49: Girio scores pinch runner James Krizan with a bloop RBI single to right field. Loyalsock 5, Williamsport 2.
11:51: After Girio steals second, Williamsport first baseman Clyde McAllister makes a nice play, snaring a Jordan Powell liner and then doubling Girio off second. Milionaires coming up with one last chance to snap out of their losing streak and move back above .500.
11:59: Stopper completes a brilliant four-hit complete-game, inducing a game-ending groundout to the mound as Loyalsock wins 5-2 and advances to the final for the first time since 2003. Stopper strikes out four and throws 98 pitches...and after what Dr. Masse said earlier about Eck rolling the dice by not throwing Noyalis, well that's why I am a writer and not a coach. Stopper is now 4-0.
Wiliamsport has to bounce back in the consolation game at 4 p.m. if it hopes to keep its playoff hopes alive. The Millionaires (7-8) have to win three of their last five to qualify and have several tough opponents remaining, including whoever they play in today's consolation.
Loyalsock 010 210 1 --5 11 0
Williamsport 000 200 0--2 4 0
