4th-inning Montoursville-South update

May 15, 2010 - Chris Masse

1:45 p.m.: Watching three scoreless innings here reminds me of the last time South and Montoursville played. The Mounties edged Montoursville, 2-1 in the 2005 Class AA semifinals at Bowman Field. Joe Agnoni threw a dazzling complete game for South which won it in the bottom of the seventh when freshman Lance Barr ripped a walk-off single. South finished that season 22-2 and captured the Mid-Penn championship.

1:48: Adam Engel nearly makes a remarkable play at shortstop, sliding into the hole on Dalton Young's grounder and making a great throw from the left-field grass but Young beats it by a step for a one-out single.

1:52: Following a Josh Metzger bunt, Derek Schmack hits an infield single into the hole at shortstop. Engel's sliding stop prevents the ball from going into left field and saves a run from scoring.

1:55: A great piece of hitting by Aaron Russell produces the game's first run. After falling behind 0-2, Russell takes an outside pitch into right field for a RBI single. Montoursville 1, South 0.

2:00: Travis Singer draws a 3-2, two-out RBI walk. Montoursville 2, South 0.

2:01: Tyler Albert does not miss another chance with the bases loaded. This time Albert drills the first pitch he sees into the left-center field gap for  two-run double. Montoursville 4, South 0. Five straight Warriors have reached base with two outs. Carpenter is at 92 pitches so South's bullpen likely will have to come up big to keep the Mounties in this game.

2:09: Ryan Orgitano gives South the spark it might need, belting a lead-off double into the right-center field gap after fouling off two two-strike pitches.

2:11: Following an error, Orgitano scores South's first run on a Zach Fuller groundout. Montoursville 4, South 1.

2:13: Caleb Catherine cuts the deficit to 4-2, hitting a sacrifice fly to center field that scores Jake Fuller. Montoursville 4, South 2.

2:14: Albert did it with his bat in the top half of the inning and does it with his defense to end the inning, throwing out a runner trying to steal second.

Montoursville  000 4--4 7 1

South              000 2--1 4 0
