Williamsport-South 3rd-inning update
May 15, 2010 - Chris Masse
4:27 p.m.: Ran into Hughesville coach Nick Grove before this game and, as I said earlier, I feel much older now. The reason is because Grove, Loyalsock coach Jeremy Eck and Loyalsock assistants Chris Allen and Mike Laychur all were playing back in 2003. And to be honest, 2003 seems like it was yesterday. These guys I interviewed as players in high school are now coaches? As if the gray hairs on my head weren't enough that is always enough to make this reporter feel like an old man.
4:31: Speaking of Grove, he is a Williamsport fan for this game but not just because that is where he went to school. Grove's Hughesville team is fighting South for a higher District 4 Class AA playoff seed. The Spartans (11-6) would move ahead of South with a wintoday and are hoping to work their way up to a No. 5 seed in what will be a fiercely-competitive field.
4:32: Kevin Horne sacrifices his body to start a Williamsport rally, getting hit by a pitch to start the inning. He then is bunted to second by Zach McCloskey and scores the game's first run on Fagnano's RBI single to left field. Williamsport 1, South 0. This is the first time Williamsport has held a lead during the last seven games and could be the spark it needs to get back to what it was doing early this season when it started 7-2.
4:38: Drae Lewis just created a lasting memory--and gave Williamsport a huge lift, crushing a mammoth three-run home run over the left-center field fence at Bowman Field, driving the ball a good 370 feet or so. Lewis was the tournament MVP last year and is now 2 for 2 in this game. Last year Lewis remarkably stole seven bases in two Brawl games. Williamsport 4, South 0.
4:44: Fagnano continues cruising along, working another 1-2-3 inning. He has retired six in a row.
Williamsport 001--1 2 1
South 000--0 0 0
