District 4 Wrestling Predictions

February 23, 2012 - Mitch Rupert
CLASS AA PREDICTIONS

106 pounds

Notable: Tyrus Hamblin's lone loss this year came by one point while up a weight class to Wyalusing's Brandon Kelley, but is going to have to get through a tough bracket just to reach the final that includes Towanda's Kyle Blascak, Warrior Run's Tyler Hornberger, Midd-West's Corey Staugger and Bucktail's Aaron Cohick. Hornberger's long and lanky at 106 pounds and can give an opponent fits.

Prediction: 1, Tyrus Hamblin, Williamson; 2, Kobe Galentine, Montgomery; 3, Ethan Calkins, Troy; 4, Kyle Blascak, Towanda; 5, Tyler Hornberger, Warrior Run; 6, Noah Kuba, Mifflinburg.

113 pounds:

Notable: This is one of the deepest weight classes in the entire tournament, featuring three returning state qualifiers ä David Sheesley, Shawn Nitcznski and Matt Welliver ä as well as regional qualifiers Caleb Pearson and Daniel Killian. Add in Lewis Williams, Brandon Kelley, Ben Lamphere and Kyle Drick, and it's going to be a battle just to get to the regional tournament.

Precdiction: 1, David Sheesley, Mifflinburg; 2, Caleb Pearson, Montoursville; 3, Matt Welliver, Benton; 4, Shawn Nitcznski, Sullivan County; 5, Brandon Kelley, Wyalusing; 6, Lewis Williams, Central Columbia.

120 pounds

Notable: It appears Logan Everett and Cole Walter would be the favorites to reach the finals. Walter is as good a freshman who has come through District 4 as there's been in recent years. But don't count out Everett and his experience as a junior. Behind those two you could get a completely different result next week than what you'll get this week with some highly-talented wrestlers.

Prediction: 1, Logan Everett, Williamson; 2, Cole Walter, Mifflinburg; 3, Kent Lane, Southern Columbia; 4, Andrew Gipe, South Williamsport; 5, Clint Vermilya, Troy; 6, Brian Smith, Sullivan County.

126 pounds

Notable: The dangerous wrestler in this bracket is Central Columbia's Jesse Shannon who has a win this year over previously undefeated Ryan Wilson of Mount Union who was ranked eighth in the state at the time. He's capable, at his best, of wrestling with the likes of Mason Zimmerman, Billy Barnes and Jared Watson. Barnes may be the dark-horse finalist on the side of the bracket that features Watson, a regional qualifier.

Prediction: 1, Billy Barnes, Williamson; 2, Mason Zimmerman, Line Mountain; 3, Jared Watson, Warrior Run; 4, Jacob Kramer, Montgomery; 5, Jesse Shannon, Central Columbia; 6, Chad Vermilya, Troy.

132 pounds

Notable: Benton's Colt Cotten has separated himself from the pack in the District 4 crowd, which is tough to do in a weight class that includes returning state qualifier Seth Lansberry. Shamokin's Dane Shovlin pulled an upset last week when he beat Midd-West's Zach Heeter in the South Section semifinals and has announced himself as a threat in the tournament. Also keep an eye on Sayre's Jesse Buck and Bucktail's Demetri Probst.

Prediction: 1, Colt Cotten, Benton; 2, Seth Lansberry, Line Mountain; 3, Ryan Hart, Wyalusing; 4, Brad Hain, Warrior Run; 5, Jesse Buck, Sayre; 6, Demetri Probst, Bucktail.

138 pounds

Notable: This is by far the deepest weight class in the district featuring state placewinner David Batkowski, regional qualifiers Heath Strickland, Zack Green, Sean Heggs, Alan Miller and Brandon Lontz. Batkowski beat Strickland at the Top Hat. Strickland, who missed the postseason with a knee injury, cruised through the East Section last week and is wrestling better than he has in four years at Muncy.

Prediction: 1, David Batkowski, Montoursville; 2, Zack Green, Northeast Bradford; 3, Heath Strickland, Muncy; 4, Sean Heggs, East Juniata; 5, Tim Kuntz, Wyalusing; 6, Brandon Lontz, Benton.

145 pounds

Notable: Hughesville's Kyle Barnes is one of just two undefeated wrestlers left in District 4 and he should get his toughest test since winning the Top Hat in December if he gets to face Line Mountain's Adam Kritzer. Kritzer is a two-time state qualifier. Taylor Porter is capable of wrestling with anybody when he's into a match, and he could be a darkhorse to get into the final.

Prediction: 1, Kyle Barnes, Hughesville; 2, Adam Kritzer, Line Mountain; 3, Taylor Porter, Milton; 4, Joe Champulvier, Wyalusing; 5, Isaiah Bobotas, Muncy; 6, Demetrius Starr, Central Columbia.

152 pounds

Notable: It's hard to call Benton's Jeric Kasunic a darkhorse as the No. 2 seed, but the returning regional fourth-place finisher is probably behind Ryan Preisch and Zack Ripic as favorites to get into the final. Ripic and Preisch wrestled earlier this year at the Dandy Duals with Presich winning on a fleeing the mat call on Ripic. Sullivan County's Dane Woodruff is also a threat to reach the final.

Prediction: 1, Ryan Preisch, Milton; 2, Zack Ripic, Towanda; 3, Jeric Kasunic, Benton; 4, Dane Woodruff, Sullivan County; 5, Chris Trawitz, Midd-West; 6, Max Reed, Lewisburg.

160 pounds

Notable: Ty Walter's only loss this year came to Central Mountain's Brian Brill in the finals of the Top Hat. Following that Walter missed a few weeks because of an injury, but has returned just as strong as he was in his state medal-winning year last year. He'll get a good push from Central Columbia's Kurt Meske who is 31-0 this year and a returning regional fourth-place finisher.

Prediction: 1, Kurt Meske, Central Columbia; 2, Ty Walter, Mifflinburg; 3, Nick Rohm, Warrior Run; 4, Ben Pepper, Canton; 5, Blake Colton, Troy; 6, Tyler Fenton, Wyalusing.

170 pounds

Notable: Troy Hembury is the only returning state qualifier in this bracket and has taken that step ahead of the pack. But Mount Carmel's Brett Przekop has the ability to keep matches close and is more than capable of pulling out wins late. Milton's Donald English had a tremendous tournament last weekend to win the West Sectional, beating a very good Garrett Shnyder in the final.

Prediction: 1, Troy Hembury, Muncy; 2, Brett Przekop, Mount Carmel; 3, Donald English, Milton; 4, Garrett Shnyder, Montgomery; 5, Dan Frankenfield, Wyalusing; 6, Ben Minnich, North Penn.

182 pounds

Notable: Benton's Jake Mankey and Wyalusing's Anthony Clark are the two best wrestlers in this bracket, but because of the way things worked out, they're on the same side of the bracket. Don't let Aaron Shrawder's 19-10 record fool you, he's wrestled much of his season up in weight and is strong as an ox. He's more than capable of battling with Clark and Mankey in strength and intensity.

Prediction: 1, Jake Mankey, Benton; 2, Patrick Ostrowsky, Lewisburg; 3, Anthony Clark, Wyalusing; 4, Dan Breech, Warrior Run; 5, Aaron Shrawder, Mifflinburg; 6, Skylar Ebner, Muncy.

195 pounds

Notable: We're probably headed for the third matchup of the season between Milton's Ryan Solomon and Lewisburg's Brandon Smith. Solomon won the first matchup, 3-1, and pulled away last week, 6-0. Smith has to go through the tougher side of the bracket that includes Wellsboro's Chad Daugherty (27-4) and Bloomsburg's Ryan Longenberger (24-4).

Prediction:1, Ryan Solomon, Milton; 2, Brandon Smith, Lewisburg; 3, Chad Daugherty, Wellsboro; 4, Ryan Longenberger, Bloomsburg; 5, Brad Poust, Hughesville; 6, Matt Hackenberg, Central Columbia.

220 pounds

Notable: This is a very balanced weight class that is wide open with quality wrestlers. North Penn's Nathan Stettler holds a pair of one-point wins over Wyalusing freshman Dylan Otis. Central Columbia's Eric McCracken is a returning regional qualifier, and Loyalsock's Cody McCracken quietly has gone 22-6 this year. Southern Columbia's Jake Becker and Montgomery's John Goetz are darkkhorse threats.

Prediction: 1, Eric McCracken, Central Columbia; 2, Nathan Stettler, North Penn; 3, Dylan Otis, Wyalusing; 4, Cody McCracken, Loyalsock; 5, Jake Becker, Southern Columbia; 6, John Goetz, Montgomery.

285 pounds

Notable: Mifflinburg's Nazar Mironenko has separated himself from the rest of the field with wins over Derek Earnest, Jake Heintzelman, Austin Fiedler and Clayton Force. It'll be an interesting first-round matchup between Fiedler and Southern Columbia's Trent Donlan for the right to face North Penn's Nathan Kriner, who has quietly gone 29-4 this year.

Prediction: 1, Nazar Mironenko, Mifflinburg; 2, Derek Earnest, Hughesville; 3, Nathan Kriner, North Penn; 4, Alex Shiber, Central Columbia; 5, Trent Donlan, Southern Columbia; 6, Austin Fiedler, Warrior Run.
