Sun-Gazette retiree reflects on a lifetime spent in newspapers

Jim Gates has worked in newspaper advertising almost all of his life, and because of that he has gained much knowledge of the industry that will stay with him as he retires at the beginning of this month.

Gates began working for the Williamsport Sun-Gazette in 1970 and is the last member of the Person family, who used to own the newspaper, to leave the industry.

Gates’ great-grandfather, Elmer E. Person, was of the first generation of the family to work at the Williamsport Sun-Gazette.

Elmer was the city editor for the Sun in 1900 and then became editor in 1906. “At that point there was just the Williamsport Sun, which was an evening paper,” Gates said.

“I can recall vividly visiting my grandfather and while he was eating his breakfast, he would read The Gazette and Bulletin,” Gates said.
