Free Internet access yields big returns
The free Internet access available in public libraries has generated the return of $110,325 to area residents. Sixty-three low income working families and individuals in Lycoming County received an average of $1,751 in refunds on their 2008 taxes using the free Internet-based i-CAN! E-FILE program at their public library. The easy-to-use Web site calculates tax returns automatically based on answers to some questions on each screen and users can print the returns or electronically file their federal and state returns. The program alerts filers that they may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) created by congress in 1975 to ease the tax burden on working families and individuals. Unfortunately 15 to 25 percent of those eligible fail to claim this credit. Pennsylvania is one of just four states that encourage families to take advantage of this program by allowing them to file online using the icanefile.org Web sit.
